Adults and children using a swimming pool need to know how to swim – and should enroll in swimming lessons from an accredited source such as the American Red Cross to learn if they don’t.
Always have an adult by the swimming pool to supervise children.
Have everyone in the family learn basic life-saving techniques and CPR.
Have CPR instructions visible in the vicinity of the swimming pool, as well as a list of emergency phone numbers.
Keep a telephone by the swimming pool in case of emergency.
Keep life-saving equipment such as personal flotation devices, ropes and poles by the swimming pool, and ensure everyone knows how to use it.
Completely enclose the swimming pool with a fence and a gate with a safety latch.
Keep the area outside the pool clear of objects that could be climbed on to allow a child over the fence.
Clear the swimming pool of toys that may attract a child when the pool is not in use.
Use the pool cover when the pool is not in use.
Completely remove the pool cover when the swimming pool is in use.
Keep the swimming pool and surrounding vicinity free of breakable objects such as glass bottles, and objects that may entangle a child, such as nets and plastic bags.
