Many mass merchants sell a blended shock treatment which contains a low amount of available chlorine. This form of shock also contains chemicals like clarifiers, flocculents and water balancers. This swimming pool shock may initially seem to be priced less per pound. Don't be fooled! You must use over twice as much of this to get the same result you have come to expect using full strength chlorine shock. So where is their low cost?

Pool shocking will keep the most common water problems away. Swim bather load, rainfall, heat and sunlight will all lower the primary pool sanitizer level and it's ability to maintain safe and clear water. Super-chlorination "burns off" or oxidizes these overwhelming contaminates and restores the power of the primary pool sanitizer. We recommend using a shock treatment at least once every seven to ten days and more frequent after periods of heavy rain and large swim bather loads.

What happens when a chlorine shock treatment is added to the pool water? The pool chlorine reacts with the water to form hypochlorous acid. This is the actual disinfectant that kills bacteria and other pathogens in the pool water. It performs this by attacking the lipids in their cell walls, then it destroys the enzymes and structures inside the cell through an oxidation reaction. All pool chlorine shock treatments work in this way. Some shock treatments will produce more disinfectant compared to others. Check the percentage of available chlorine when you select a pool shock. The higher the amount precentage, the stronger the shock treatment.
