Safety Pool Covers
Mesh and Solid Safety
Swimming Pool Covers
Swimming pool safety covers are available in mesh or solid vinyl fabric types. The most popular type is the mesh safety cover. The other type is a solid fabric cover, that is more popular in geographical areas that normally do not receive very heavy snow loads. Both types of safety covers are installed the same way, using recessed brass concrete deck anchors that are permanently installed into the pool deck. Safety pool covers are stretched tight and locked down over the swim area using adjustable straps, stainless steel buckles and springs that attach to the deck anchors. Safety covers provide a barrier of pool protection that can support hundreds of pounds and you can even walk across them.
The difference between the two safety cover types is the fabric. Mesh safety covers block most of the sunlight that can cause algae concerns in the Springtime, yet it allows water to drain through and the larger debris, that causes most of spring clean-up just blows away. However, small amounts of silt and dirt may pass through the mesh.
Solid safety pool covers block all the sunlight to better eliminate algae development. Solid covers collect snow, ice and water. When the snow and ice melts, it drains through a mesh panel constructed in the center of the cover. Solid covers keep more fine silt and dirt out of the pool than mesh covers. Solid safety covers may also be made without center drain panels, which will then require the installation of a pool cover pump on top of the cover to automatically pump water accumulation off the cover. Because the fabric is solid, it may allow puddles to accumulate on the surface if the straps are not adjusted properly to divert water accumulation to the center drain panel. A mesh safety pool cover eliminates water accumulation and this type of risk to children or pets who may unexpectedly come in contact with the shallow water on top of the cover.
When the cover is removed, the deck anchors will screw down, recessing flush with the deck to prevent tripping or toe-stubbing. If you do not have a concrete deck surrounding your pool that is at least three foot wide, there are different types of safety cover deck anchors available for wood decks, brick, pavers and earth.
Pool safety covers are designed for use anytime of year. It takes only minutes to install, giving you peace of mind if you need to leave on vacation or your pool is unattended for periods of time. Most in-ground pool owners prefer using a safety cover when winterizing or closing their pool compared to standard winter covers not only because they provide better safety and less pool maintenance, but they are much more attractive in the backyard.
