Read More Information about Pool Chlorine:
Maintaining proper pool water balance and pool chlorine sanitizer level is most important to keep the pool water safe and clear for swimmers. Following a simple pool care routine can save pool owners many hours of pool maintenance and hundreds of dollars per year. A pool care maintenance routine is relatively easy by following a few simple steps each week and requires a basic understanding of how the swimming pool chemicals interact together to produce safe, clear pool water. Adhering to this basic routine will allow you to achieve the same results as a pool care specialist. In the beginning, writing your pool care schedule on a calendar is extremely helpful until it has been practiced, learned and becomes routine.

Pool Chlorine Basics:
Chlorine for swimming pools is the most popular and widely used sanitizer for pools. Chlorine should always be administered to the pool dissolved into solution with your swimming pool water. When added to water, all the different types of pool chlorine will change, forming hypochlorus acid in pool water which is the active chlorine sanitizer. This form of pool sanitizer may now combine with organics and bacteria in the water to destroy these unwanted contaminates. After the chlorine sanitizer has combined with a contaminate in the swimming pool water, much of the pool chlorine becomes inactive, builds up in the pool water in a different form known as chloramines and now can no longer effectively sanitize the swimming pool water. To remove this chloramine build-up and restore proper chlorine sanitation in the pool water, you need to burn-off this build-up by super-chlorinating the pool water. The pool chlorine test level required to achieve this result is between 5 and 10 parts per million (ppm). This is commonly known as administering a “shock” treatment. Shocking the pool water removes excess contaminants and combined chlorine. Pool shock treatments should be administer at least weekly, so select a day of week and mark it on your pool care calendar until this becomes routine.

In order to determine the type of swimming pool chlorine you want to use you should compare the different methods required to administer chlorine to the pool water and the price you are willing to pay for that type of pool chlorine. More often, pool chlorine tablets are the least expensive and most convienent choice. There are several types of pool chlorine to choose from. Each type performs well as long as you administer them correctly and follow the routine. The chlorine pool products in the marketplace are virtually all the same regardless of the named brand. However, you should learn to pay attention to the active ingredients and available chlorine percentage when comparing to get the best value for the dollars spent. All pool chlorine suppliers try to persuade you into thinking that their product is somehow superior to the other brands. This is most often not the case. Pool chlorine is available in 3 inch chlorine tablets, 1 inch chlorine tablets, chlorine sticks, granular chlorine and liquid form. After doing you own comparison of the active ingredients on the label to various brands of swimming pool chlorine, you will find that the active ingredient is exactly the same. The only real difference you may see between brands is the concentration percentage of active ingredients. The active ingredient in 3 inch chlorine tablets, 1 inch chlorine tabs and chlorine sticks is called Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione, (aka) Trichlor. You should look for a concentration of 90% for Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione in pool chlorine tablets or chlorine sticks. The active ingredient of granular chlorine is Sodium Dichloro-S-Triazinetrione, or Di-chlor for short. You should look for a concentration of 56% to 62% Sodium Dichloro-S-Triazinetrione for granular chlorine. Another form of Granular chlorine is called Calcium Hypochlorite. Calcium Hypochlorite is available in larger quantities in a 65% available chlorine. Calcium Hypochlorite is available in stronger concentrations ranging from 65% to 78% in pre-packaged pool shock treatments. Granular Calcium Hypochlorite chlorine works well, however it must be pre-dissolved in water before adding it into the pool and it requires almost daily application to the swimming pool water.
The proper way to administer chlorine into the pool water depends on the type or form of swimming pool chlorine you select to use. The two most popular methods to administer Trichlor tablets and chlorine sticks is to use a floating chlorine feeder or an automatic chlorine chemical feeder to automatically dissolve chlorine tablets or chlorine sticks into your pool water. Automatic chlorine feeders, chlorinators allow the chlorine to be precisely and slowly administered into your swimming pool water. The smaller the tablet, the faster is dissolves into solution, however any tablet size may be used.
There is the wide-spread practice of administering pool chlorine tablets directly into the pool skimmer baskets to dissolve as the pool circulation pump allows water to flow over the tablets. Pool Chlorine is acidic and corrosive. Administering Trichlor this way will cause deterioration and erosion of pool equipment components in the water pathway leading to premature failure of pool baskets, pool pump, filters and expensive pool heater heat exchangers. Chlorinators and pool chemicals feeders are to be installed into the pool water return line after all other pool equipment.
Although the swimming pool large 3” chlorine tablets have become the most popular swimming pool choice, Granular Di-chlor chlorine works just as well and is basically pH neutral. The chlorinating granules are not to be used in automatic chlorinators. Administering granular Di-chlor or Calcium Hypochlorite allows a precise control of the chlorine level in the swimming pool because the chlorine level must be tested and more chemical added by hand almost daily to insure proper sanitation. Di-chlor is not required to be pre-dissolved before being added to the pool water like Calcium Hypochlorite and will not harm or fade swimming pool vinyl liners.
